ST. MARY’S

Bring another layer. Stay for the lake.

What to Expect

The drive up Fall River Road gives everyone a little time to settle into the mountains. By St. Mary’s, you’re among the trees, with cooler air coming through the windows and a reason to reach for that extra fleece.

The rocky trail toward St. Mary’s Lake brings hikers into a landscape of alpine water and steep mountain slopes. Take your time on the climb. Stop for the view, share the trail, and let a snack break last a little longer. Beyond the trailhead, this is also a mountain neighborhood—somebody’s everyday place, and one worth treating with care.

Alpine scenery, photography, a mountain hike and lunch in Idaho Springs afterward.

Give it. A morning or afternoon, with room to take the trail at your own pace.
Good at.

Know before you go.

A short hike can still be demanding at altitude. Bring sturdy shoes and layers, check current conditions and parking requirements, and respect private property. Snow and ice require additional preparation.

Leave room for dinner.

Find a table. Settle in. Share the stories of the day while a local kitchen takes care of dinner. Stay the night and give tomorrow a slower start, with coffee, breakfast, and a little more time in the mountains.
