A quieter kind of mountain day.

Gone Fishing. Close to Everything.

What to Expect

Find a patch of bank. Listen to the water. Wait for the small tug that makes everyone suddenly pay attention.

Most developed public access points are free, but everyone 16 and older needs a Colorado fishing license. A one-day license is roughly $20 before any gear, bait or private-pond fees, so check current rates before you go. Wear shoes that grip, sun protection and the extra layer you almost left in the car. Easy creekside spots are busiest on summer weekends, especially late morning. This is a good fit for first-timers, families and anglers who care as much about the creek sounds as the catch. If the catch is the only thing that will make the day work, choose the stocked pond at Mt. Evans Trout Fishing. You pay for every fish you catch, and catch-and-release is not allowed.

The creek follows the canyon past Idaho Springs, Dumont and Lawson, with developed access at parks and along parts of the Greenway. It works well when you want a few casts, lunch nearby and no long approach. Check posted boundaries. Not every good-looking bank is public.

CLEAR CREEK / MOVING WATER

Stay close to town.

HIGH COUNTRY / MORE WALKING

Earn a little quiet.

Alpine lakes and small streams trade convenience for space. Expect rougher approaches, thinner air, limited service and weather that moves quickly. Check the trail, land ownership and current regulations before leaving the pavement. Download the map first.
