DISPERSED CAMPINGA little farther from the facilities. A little more planning.
Dispersed camping means camping outside a developed campground. It is permitted on some national forest lands, but an open pullout or an existing fire ring does not automatically mean you can camp there.
Check Forest Service maps, current closures, and area-specific rules before choosing a spot. Popular corridors, including Guanella Pass, have restrictions on where camping is allowed. Plan to bring your own water, manage waste responsibly, and pack out everything you bring.
A little planning goes a long way.
Look after your camp and the places around it.
Check campground opening dates, reservations, vehicle limits, and available facilities before leaving. Bring layers for cold nights and a weather forecast for your destination.
Follow current fire restrictions, store food securely away from wildlife, and respect quiet hours. Leave your site clean and ready for the next person to enjoy.
Good food belongs at the picnic table, too.
Pick up takeout on your way to camp or head into town for a meal together. A shared pizza and another story from the day can make a simple evening one of the best parts of the trip.
